If you’re a dog parent in Chennai, there’s an important update from the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) that you shouldn’t miss.
Starting this November 2025, GCC has made microchipping and rabies vaccination mandatory for all dogs within Chennai city limits.
What Does the GCC Mandate Mean for Dog Owners?
Under the new rule, every dog in Chennai must be microchipped and vaccinated against rabies before December 14, 2025 (extended deadline from November 23, 2025, December 7, 2025).
This initiative helps GCC maintain accurate records of pet ownership, improve disease control, and ensure responsible pet parenting across the city.
What Is a Microchip and How Does It Work?
A microchip is a small, rice-sized RFID tag that’s safely implanted under your dog’s skin usually near the shoulder area.
Each chip carries a unique 15-digit identification number, which can be read using an RFID scanner.
When registered, this number links directly to your pet’s details including name, breed, vaccination records, and your contact information ensuring your dog can always be identified if lost or found.
Why Is Microchipping Important?
-
-
Permanent Identification: Unlike collars or tags that can fall off, microchips last a lifetime.
-
Proof of Ownership: Helps authorities verify your pet’s rightful owner.
-
Supports Pet Licensing: Required for registering your dog with GCC.
-
Improves Animal Safety: Ensures your dog’s vaccination and ownership details are traceable.

How to Get Your Dog Microchipped
You can get your dog microchipped at any SKS Veterinary Hospital branch in Chennai – Abiramapuram, Valasaravakkam, ECR (Akkarai), and Chromepet.
To make this process easier for pet parents, you can visit any of our Chennai branches and get your pet microchipped at ₹1250 (additional pet licensing assistance and doctors fee will apply).
We also conducted a special Microchipping Drive on November 9, 2025, where we microchipped at ₹599.
