Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Pet Microchipping & License Mandate

Mandatory from December 14, 2025 (Extended Deadline)

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has made microchipping and licensing of all dogs mandatory within GCC city limits. All pet owners must register their pets and ensure they are microchipped on or before Decemeber 14, 2025 (extended from November 23, 2025, December 7, 2025).

Starting December 15, 2025, GCC teams will begin door-to-door checks, and owners found without valid registration may face a penalty.

Purpose of the Mandate

This initiative by GCC is aimed at:

  • Preventing pet abandonment and promoting responsible ownership.

  • Ensuring pets receive yearly anti-rabies vaccinations.

  • Helping authorities trace lost pets quickly through permanent ID tracking.

  • Maintaining a city-wide pet health and welfare database.

How to Comply with the GCC Requirement

To stay compliant, Chennai pet owners must:

  1. Register their pets online using the official GCC portal or mobile app.

  2. Provide pet photographs, address proof, and valid anti-rabies vaccination certificates.

  3. Get their pets microchipped – either at GCC’s designated centers or through authorized private veterinary hospitals.

  4. Update the microchip ID on the application and submit it for approval from both vet and GCC.

  5. Your pet license will be approved within 24 hours ideally and you will be notified via SMS.

  6. Download the license from the GCC portal.

Don’t Wait Until the Deadline

Avoid last-minute rushes and penalties. Book your microchipping appointment today and make sure your pet is fully compliant with GCC regulations before December 14, 2025.

FAQs – GCC Pet Microchipping & License Mandate

A microchip is a tiny electronic chip (about the size of a grain of rice) implanted under your pet’s skin. It stores a unique ID number linked to your contact details in a secure database, helping identify and reunite lost pets with their owners.

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) introduced this rule to prevent pet abandonment, ensure yearly rabies vaccinations, and promote responsible pet ownership across Chennai.

All dog and cat owners within Chennai city limits must microchip and register their pets with GCC before Dec 14, 2025.

Starting Dec 15, 2025, GCC teams will conduct door-to-door checks. Owners without a valid pet license or microchip may face fines up to ₹5,000.

You can get it done at:

  • Any of SKS Veterinary Hospital’s Chennai branches (Abhiramapuram, Chromepet, Valasaravakkam, and Akkarai–ECR) with pet license registration guidance.

  • Or GCC veterinary centers at Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, Pulianthope, Lloyds Colony, Nungambakkam, Kannammapet, and Meenambakkam.

Not at all. It’s a quick and almost painless procedure, similar to a vaccination injection. Most pets don’t even react.

At SKS Veterinary Hospital, microchipping is offered at ₹1250 on regular days.

You’ll need:

  • A clear photo of your pet

  • Anti-rabies vaccination certificate

  • Proof of residence (like Aadhaar or EB bill)

  • Your veterinarian’s registration number

You can register through the official GCC pet registration portal available here.

Currently, GCC’s rule applies to dogs and cats only. Other animals do not require registration or microchipping at this time.

You still need to register the microchip number in the GCC portal and upload your vaccination and address details to complete the process.

A microchip lasts for your pet’s entire lifetime – it never needs to be replaced or recharged.

SKS provides:

  • Certified veterinarians to perform safe microchipping

  • Support with GCC registration guidance

  • Affordable pricing and quick appointment scheduling

Yes. The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has made microchipping and anti-rabies vaccination mandatory for all pet dogs in Chennai. Owners must complete the process before the December 14, 2025 deadline.

No. A valid microchip number is required to complete your dog’s GCC pet license registration. Without a microchip, the application will not be accepted on the GCC portal.

The entire procedure takes less than a minute. It’s quick, safe, and painless — similar to a vaccination shot. No anesthesia or recovery time is needed.

You can get GCC-approved microchipping done at SKS Veterinary Hospital branches in Abiramapuram, Valasaravakkam, ECR (Akkarai), and Chromepet, or at GCC’s own veterinary centers.

You can visit any SKS Veterinary Hospital branch, where your pet’s microchip can be scanned using an RFID reader. The 15-digit number should match the one provided on your certificate or packaging.
